Paul Tazewell has made history as the first Black man to win the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, honored for his exceptional work on the film adaptation of “Wicked.” Tazewell’s illustrious career includes a Tony Award for “Hamilton” and an Emmy for “The Wiz! Live,” positioning him closer to the prestigious EGOT status. In his acceptance speech, he expressed gratitude to the Academy and acknowledged the cast of “Wicked,” including Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, who delivered an Oz-themed medley earlier in the evening.
Reflecting on his journey, Tazewell emphasized the significance of representation in the industry, noting the absence of Black male role models in his field during his formative years. His groundbreaking win not only celebrates his individual achievements but also marks a pivotal moment for diversity and inclusion in the arts.
The 2025 Oscars also recognized other historic achievements, including Latvia’s “Flow” winning Best Animated Feature and Zoe Saldaña becoming the first American of Dominican origin to win an Oscar.
Tazewell’s award is a testament to his dedication and talent, inspiring future generations of designers from diverse backgrounds to pursue their passions in the arts.
