Joseph van Vicker, known professionally as Van Vicker, is a Ghanaian actor, film director, producer and humanitarian. Born on 1 August 1977 in Accra, he is of mixed heritage, with a Ghanaian-Liberian mother and a Dutch father. His father died when he was six years old, and he was raised by his mother, who worked as a traveller, allowing him to visit many places around the world. He has often described himself as a global citizen as a result.
Vicker attended Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast, where he was a classmate of fellow actor Majid Michel. He completed his secondary studies at Botwe in 1995 but was unable to proceed to university at the time due to financial challenges in his family.
He later returned to academia and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Strategic Communication from the African University College of Communications in 2021. He went on to complete a Master’s degree in Communications from the same institution in 2022. In early 2023, he enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws programme at the Wisconsin International University College in Ghana.
Vicker began his media career in 1999 as a radio presenter at Groove 106.3 FM and also worked at Vibe 91.9 FM. He worked as a television personality for TV3 Ghana and Metro TV. His first major television role was in the Ghanaian series ‘Sun City’, in which he played LeRoy King Junior, a Fine Arts student born in the United States who arrives at Sun City to complete his education, the series ran for a total of ten episodes.
His film debut came in ‘Divine Love’ (2004), in which he played a supporting character. The film also served as the debut for actors Jackie Appiah and Majid Michel. Since then, he has appeared in over one hundred films, often playing the male romantic lead opposite actresses such as Jackie Appiah and Nadia Buari.
He has appeared in numerous Nollywood productions alongside prominent actors including Tonto Dikeh, Mercy Johnson, Stephanie Okereke, Chika Ike and Jim Iyke. His Nollywood filmography includes ‘My Soul Mate’, ‘Heart of Fire’, ‘Popular King’, ‘Gambling with Marriage’, ‘Harvest of Love’, ‘Stolen Will’, ‘The Joy of a Prince’, ‘Discovered’, ‘The Kingdom’ and ‘Against the Law’.
In 2008, Vicker received two nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Upcoming Actor. He is the chief executive officer of Sky Plus Orange Productions, a film production house through which he has directed, starred in, and produced several films since 2008.
His 2012 comedy ‘Joni Waka’ earned him the NAFCA Best Actor and Director Awards. Other awards include the Afro-Hollywood Award for Best Actor in 2009, the Pan African Film Festival Creative Achievement Award in 2011, and the Best International Actor award at the Papyrus Magazine Screen Actors Awards in 2013.
Vicker married Adjoa on 16 October 2003. They met during their secondary school days and have three children: Vj, J’dyl and J-ian Vicker. J’dyl is the eldest at twenty-one years old.
He runs the Van Vicker Training Facility, which was established in 2013 and offers courses in acting for film, audition techniques, scene study and improvisation. He also founded the Van Vicker Foundation, a youth outreach initiative that supports development in the arts, sports, humanitarianism and education. In 2018, he opened the Van Vicker School of Arts in Monrovia, Liberia.
His career spans more than two decades, and he remains one of the most established figures in Ghanaian and African cinema.
