In the world of international diplomacy and development, few roles carry the weight and scope of a United Nations Resident Coordinator. It is a position that demands a rare blend of strategic vision, profound empathy, and seasoned experience in governance and peacebuilding. In Rwanda, a nation renowned for its remarkable journey of renewal, this crucial post is held by Professor Ozonnia Ojielo, who also serves as the personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General.
Based in Kigali, Professor Ojielo is the senior-most UN official in the country, leading the efforts of the entire UN team in supporting the Government of Rwanda to achieve its national development priorities and the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With a professional network exceeding ten thousand individuals, his leadership is a testament to a career dedicated to fostering resilience and prosperity in communities across the globe.
His current role is the culmination of over two decades of distinguished service within the United Nations system. Prior to his appointment in Rwanda in July 2022, Professor Ojielo served for three years as the UN Resident Coordinator in the Kyrgyz Republic, a role he initially took on in late 2017. His tenure in Central Asia was marked by a steadfast commitment to coordinating international efforts in the region.
Before his overseas postings, Professor Ojielo’s expertise was instrumental at the regional and headquarters levels. He served as the Regional Cluster Director for Governance and Peacebuilding in Africa at the UNDP Regional Bureau for Africa, overseeing critical initiatives across the continent. Earlier, he was the Director for Conflict Prevention and Recovery at the UNDP Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery in New York, shaping policy and response strategies on a global scale.
His field experience is both deep and diverse. He has served as a Senior Peace and Development Advisor with the United Nations in Nairobi, a Senior Governance Advisor for UNDP in Ghana, and was entrusted with the day-to-day management of the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission as its Officer in Charge and Chief of Operations. In this poignant role, he supervised the delicate processes of statement-taking, research, investigations, and public hearings, culminating in the Commission’s final report, a vital document for national healing.
Remarkably, this extensive international career has a foundation in law and justice. For over a decade, Professor Ojielo was a Principal Partner at a law firm in Lagos, Nigeria, where he honed the analytical and advocacy skills that would underpin his future work in governance and human rights.
Adding ‘academic’ to his titles of ‘diplomat’ and ‘lawyer’, Professor Ojielo is also a Seasonal Professor at the Institute for Peace, Conflict and Development Studies at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, sharing his wealth of practical knowledge with the next generation of leaders.
Professor Ozonnia Ojielo’s career is a powerful narrative of dedication, from the courtrooms of Lagos to the truth commissions of Sierra Leone and the diplomatic halls of the United Nations. His story is one of unwavering commitment to building a more peaceful, just, and prosperous world, making him a fitting leader for the UN’s vital mission in Rwanda.
