Born on 28 August 1999 in Düsseldorf, Germany, Maduka Emilio Okoye is a professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Serie A club Udinese and the Nigeria national team. The son of an Igbo Nigerian father and a German mother, Okoye grew up in Germany but maintains a deep connection to his Nigerian heritage.
Okoye’s youth career began with DJK SC Flingern 08, followed by spells at Fortuna Düsseldorf, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Bayer Leverkusen, where he spent eight years from 2009 to 2017. In the summer of 2017, he left Leverkusen to join the youth team of Fortuna Düsseldorf.
He made his professional debut on 14 October 2017 for Fortuna Düsseldorf II in the Regionalliga West. In July 2020, Okoye signed with Sparta Rotterdam in the Netherlands on a free transfer, where he was voted Player of the Season for 2020 to 2021 and helped the club finish eighth in the Eredivisie.
His performances attracted the attention of Premier League club Watford, who signed him in November 2021 for a fee understood to be in the region of six million euros. He signed a five-and-a-half-year contract, though he remained on loan at Sparta Rotterdam for the remainder of the 2021 to 2022 season.
In August 2023, Okoye moved to Italian Serie A side Udinese on a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee. He has since established himself as a key figure at the club, signing a new contract in August 2024 that keeps him at Udinese until 30 June 2028. Despite reported interest from clubs across Germany, England, France and Turkey, Okoye has expressed his happiness and commitment to Udinese, describing the city as his second home.
Okoye made his international debut for Nigeria on 13 October 2019, coming on as a substitute in the 63rd minute of a friendly against Brazil. Although he was born in Germany, Okoye has stated that he always knew he wanted to represent Nigeria. He has earned over 20 caps for the Super Eagles and has emerged as a strong contender for the first-choice goalkeeper position.
Okoye’s journey has not been without challenges. In July 2025, he was handed a two-month suspension by the Italian Football Federation for violating the general principle of fair play under Article 4 of the Federal Sports Justice Code.
The ban, effective from 18 August to 19 October 2025, forced him to miss Udinese’s Coppa Italia opener against Carrarese and six Serie A matches. However, he was cleared of more serious match-fixing and sporting fraud charges, and he has since made a strong comeback, regaining his starting position at Udinese and delivering impressive performances for both club and country.
Away from the pitch, Okoye has garnered significant attention for his looks, going viral during a friendly held before the World Cup and earning the label of “the sexiest footballer in the world”.
Despite the attention, Okoye remains focused on his football, stating that his priorities lie in his professional career rather than distractions away from the field. With his contract at Udinese secure and his international career gaining momentum, Maduka Okoye continues to pursue his ambition of becoming a key figure for both his club and his country.
