In Nigeria’s vibrant entertainment scene, few names command as much respect as Don Jazzy. Born Michael Collins Ajereh on 26 November 1982, this multi-talented producer, singer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist has shaped the sound of Afrobeats and launched the careers of some of Nigeria’s biggest stars. From co-founding Mo’ Hits Records with D’banj to establishing the powerhouse Mavin Records, Don Jazzy’s influence on African music is undeniable.
From Ajegunle to Global Stardom
Raised in Ajegunle, Lagos, Don Jazzy discovered his passion for music early, picking up the bass guitar and piano by age 12. His journey took him from Federal Government College Lagos to Ambrose Alli University, where he studied Business Management. A life-changing trip to London in 2000—where he worked as a McDonald’s security guard while honing his craft—set the stage for his future success.
The Mo’ Hits Era & Global Breakthrough
In 2004, Don Jazzy and D’banj launched Mo’ Hits Records, birthing hits like Tongolo, Oliver Twist, and Wande Coal’s Mushin 2 MoHits—an album still hailed as a Nigerian classic. His signature tag, “It’s Don Jazzy Again!”, became synonymous with hit-making.
His talent caught the attention of Kanye West, who recruited him for GOOD Music in 2011. There, he co-produced Lift Off (featuring Beyoncé) on Jay-Z and Kanye’s Watch the Throne album—a major milestone for an African producer.
Mavin Records: Building a Musical Empire
After Mo’ Hits disbanded in 2012, Don Jazzy founded Mavin Records, declaring it would become “the powerhouse of African music.” He wasn’t wrong.
Under his leadership, Mavin has nurtured superstars like Rema, Ayra Starr, and Tiwa Savage, blending Afrobeats with global pop and R&B. His keen ear for talent and business acumen have made Mavin one of Africa’s most influential labels.
Beyond Music: Entrepreneurship & Philanthropy
Don Jazzy’s ventures extend beyond music. In 2022, he launched Jazzy Burger, a fast-food chain, proving his knack for business. He’s also known for his philanthropy, supporting education and healthcare initiatives.
Personal Life: Faith, Family & Loss
A devoted member of the Cherubim & Seraphim Church, Don Jazzy stays grounded in his faith despite his fame. His personal life has seen both joy and heartbreak—his 2003 marriage ended due to his relentless career focus, and in 2022, he lost his beloved mother to cancer, a loss he shared publicly with touching tributes.
Awards & Legacy
With multiple Headies Awards, Nigerian Entertainment Awards, and global recognition, Don Jazzy’s impact is undeniable. Artists like Wande Coal credit him with “creating the syllabus of Nigerian music,” influencing generations of musicians.
Why Don Jazzy Matters
More than just a producer, Don Jazzy is a cultural architect. His ability to spot talent, innovate sounds, and build empires makes him a true icon. Whether mentoring young artists or dropping chart-topping beats, he remains at the heart of Afrobeats’ global takeover.
