The grandeur of Coulsdon Manor Golf Club in Surrey provided the perfect backdrop for a landmark evening in Rotary history. On Saturday, 19th July 2025, Rotarian Olatunji Olaleye—affectionately known as District Governor TJ—was officially installed as District Governor of Rotary District 1145, marking a historic milestone as the first Black, Nigerian, and African leader to hold this esteemed position within Rotary Great Britain and Ireland. The occasion was not merely a ceremonial event but a celebration of diversity, service, and the enduring spirit of Rotary’s global mission.
An Evening of Tradition and Inspiration

The evening began with a sense of reverence and purpose, as Immediate Past District Governor Tim Vile called the gathering to order. Assistant Governor Cynthia Oteng led the assembly in the Rotary Grace, a moment of reflection that set the tone for the evening. District Governor-Elect Mike Thorn then presented the Object of Rotary, a foundational principle that underscores the organisation’s unwavering commitment to service, ethical leadership, and fostering goodwill across borders.

The programme was rich with symbolism and tradition. District Governor-Elect Bukola Bakare of District 9111 delivered a stirring recitation of The 4-Way Test, a moral compass that guides Rotarians in their personal and professional lives. The room resonated with harmony as Rotarians Tunde Onilogbo and Past District Rotarian Representative Dr Dapo Ayoola led the assembly in spirited renditions of Rotary, My Rotary and Vive le Rotary, anthems that embody the unity and passion of the Rotary movement.

Among the evening’s highlights were the heartfelt tributes to District Governor Olaleye’s journey. Past District Governor Annemarie Van Bochove Allen reflected on his remarkable path to leadership, while Miss EKO Olaleye presented a touching profile of the man behind the title—a leader whose humility and dedication have left an indelible mark on Rotary.

A Journey of Breaking Barriers
District Governor Olaleye’s Rotary journey is a testament to perseverance, vision, and the transformative power of service. His affiliation with Rotary began in 1984 as a Rotaractor, a period that laid the foundation for his lifelong commitment to the organisation’s ideals. In 2007, he joined the Rotary Club of Navan, Ireland, where he made history as the club’s first African and non-Irish Vice President and President-Elect.

His leadership continued to flourish when he relocated to the United Kingdom, becoming a member of the Rotary Club of Wallington. There, he once again broke barriers, serving as the club’s first African and non-British President. Beyond his administrative roles, District Governor Olaleye has been a driving force in humanitarian efforts, volunteering in medical outreach programmes across multiple countries and championing gender equality through the District Girl-Child Empowerment Committee. His work exemplifies Rotary’s motto, *Service Above Self*, and his ascent to District Governor is a milestone not only for him but for the entire Rotary community.
A Celebration of Community and Commitment
The installation ceremony was more than a formal proceeding—it was a vibrant celebration of Rotary’s collective spirit. Past, present, and future District Governors stood in solidarity, embodying the organisation’s tradition of mentorship and continuity. The evening’s festivities included an American Auction and a raffle draw, activities that underscored Rotary’s commitment to fundraising for meaningful causes.

As the formal programme drew to a close, the room erupted in a jubilant performance of *When the Saints Go Marching In*, a fitting tribute to District Governor Olaleye’s unwavering faith in service. The newly installed governor then delivered a loyal toast, expressing his gratitude to the Rotary community and reaffirming his dedication to advancing Rotary’s mission. The evening culminated in a lively dance, as guests celebrated not just District Governor Olaleye’s achievement but the bright future of Rotary under his leadership.
A Vision for the Future
In his post-installation address, District Governor Olaleye struck a chord of humility and resolve. “This role is not just a personal honour but a testament to the inclusive spirit of Rotary,” he remarked. “Together, we will continue to serve with integrity and passion.” His words resonated deeply, reminding all present that Rotary’s strength lies in its ability to unite people across cultures, backgrounds, and generations in pursuit of a common good.
Assistant Governor Jelliat Oyetunji delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks, capturing the collective optimism of the evening. As guests departed, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose, inspired by District Governor Olaleye’s vision and eager to contribute to the year ahead.

A New Chapter for Rotary
The installation of District Governor Olatunji Olaleye marks a pivotal moment in Rotary’s history—one that reflects the organisation’s evolving commitment to diversity and inclusion. His leadership promises to bridge communities, amplify underrepresented voices, and reinforce Rotary’s global impact.
For Rotary Great Britain and Ireland, this is more than a ceremonial transition; it is a powerful statement about the future. As District Governor Olaleye embarks on his term, he carries with him the hopes of a community ready to embrace change, celebrate progress, and continue the vital work of service.
In the words of Rotary International’s founder, Paul Harris, “Rotary is a force for good in the world.” With leaders like District Governor Olaleye at the helm, that force grows ever stronger.
