Alex Okosi: The Architect of Africa’s Digital Expansion

by Duke Magazine

When it comes to amplifying Africa’s global influence, few have done it as quietly and effectively as Alex Okosi. The former MTV Base Africa pioneer, now Managing Director for Google in Africa, has turned a career in media into a mission to connect, empower, and monetize Africa’s digital economy.

In May 2025, Okosi announced a $250 million Google Africa Investment Fund, aimed specifically at supporting AI-driven startups, content platforms, and inclusive fintech tools. This fund isn’t just about profits—it’s about building infrastructure that lets African creators and entrepreneurs thrive on their own terms. His impact is already being felt. Through programs like Google for Creators Africa and African Women in AI, Okosi is fostering a new generation of tech-savvy talent. In Nairobi, he helped launch the first YouTube Creator Studio on the continent. In Lagos, he supported a cross-border payments accelerator linking fintech startups from Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa.

More than a digital strategist, Okosi is a cultural bridge. His background in entertainment allows him to think beyond platforms—to content, identity, and influence. “It’s not just about giving Africans tools,” he shared during a keynote at the Global Tech Forum in Kigali. “It’s about enabling them to tell their stories, solve their problems, and lead global conversations.”
