Azubuike Michael Egwu, known to audiences across Africa as Zubby Michael, has built a reputation as one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces. Born on 1 February 1985 in Anambra State, he grew up in Adamawa, where he completed his early education before earning a degree in Mass Communication from Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
He entered the film industry in 2006 and first appeared in Missing Rib, but it was his lead role in The Three Widows that brought him widespread attention. Over the years, he has become synonymous with playing gangsters, villains and tough men, appearing in more than 200 films.
Michael’s career has never been confined to acting alone. In 2019, he was appointed Special Adviser on Media to the Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano, a role that signalled his growing interest in public life.
More recently, in April 2026, he formally joined the African Democratic Congress in his hometown of Ozubulu, a move that fuelled speculation about a future run for the House of Representatives, although he has not confirmed any electoral ambition.
Alongside politics, Michael has expanded his business interests. In October 2026, he launched a body spray brand, Ayirah Gold, which sold out its first consignment within four days. As chief executive of A1 Movies and A1 Factory, he has spoken openly about tapping into his large fan base and his intention to move manufacturing to Nigeria in due course.
From the gritty roles that made his name to the boardroom and the political register, Zubby Michael remains a study in reinvention, proving that Nollywood fame can be a platform for far more than the screen.
