In Port Harcourt, among drawings of hulls and engine rooms, Engr. Dr. Eferebo Ibietela Sylvanus is making a quiet but forceful case for Nigeria’s maritime future. For him, shipbuilding is not just a technical pursuit. It is a question of national capacity.
Born on 7 June 1983 in Tombia Town, Rivers State, Sylvanus has spent more than two decades turning that conviction into practice. He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Marine Engineering, a Master’s degree in Naval Architecture and Ship Construction, and a doctorate in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding, all from Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.
That academic grounding led him to found Somatrix Marine Limited, where he serves as chief executive. The firm specialises in ship design, marine surveys, construction management and research, with operations extending to South Africa. It applies advanced simulation technologies, including computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis, to test designs before steel is cut.
But Sylvanus is not only a businessman. As National Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects, he has championed research, training and international collaboration.
He also chairs the Management Board of the Centre for Marine and Offshore Technology Development at Rivers State University. His message is consistent, Nigeria must grow its own technical capacity and reduce its reliance on foreign expertise if it hopes to strengthen its blue economy.
His work has earned recognition beyond the classroom and the shipyard. In October 2026, he received the Maritime Innovation and Technology Leadership Award at the 15th Democracy Heroes Award Africa in Abuja, an honour that highlighted his contribution to marine engineering and maritime technology.
A Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers and a COREN-registered engineer, Sylvanus is married to Mrs. Chidimma Joy Eferebo and has three children. Yet his professional influence reaches further, offering young engineers from the Niger Delta proof that world-class ship design can begin at home.
For Sylvanus, ships are not merely vessels. They are floating evidence of what Nigeria can become when it invests in its own minds.
