Karl Toriola: The Tech Titan Balancing Boardrooms and Fishing Boats
When you picture a telecoms CEO, you probably imagine board meetings, investor calls and high-stakes negotiations. But Karl Toriola, the visionary steering MTN Nigeria, breaks the mould – this tech titan spends his downtime wrestling 130kg marlin off Nigeria’s coast.
From Ife to the Pinnacle of Telecoms
Born in Modakeke, Osun State, Toriola’s journey began at Obafemi Awolowo University before earning his MSc in Communication Systems at Wales’ Swansea University. His career reads like a telecoms playbook:
– Ericsson Nigeria’s early GSM rollout team (2000)
– Vmobile’s (now Airtel) Chief Operations Officer
– MTN’s Chief Technical Officer (2006)
– CEO roles across Congo Brazzaville & Cameroon
– Now at the helm of Nigeria’s largest mobile network
The 5G Pioneer
Since taking MTN Nigeria’s reins in 2021, Toriola has:
✔ Launched Nigeria’s first 5G network
✔ Spearheaded MoMo PSB’s financial inclusion drive
✔ Navigated Nigeria’s infrastructure challenges with $ billions in network investment
“Getting MTN back to being loved is my biggest achievement,” he admits, referencing the company’s improved public perception despite sector-wide tariff hikes.
The Avid Angler CEO
Forget golf – Toriola’s passion lies 60 nautical miles offshore:
Catches-and-releases endangered billfish
Navigates using GPS and storm radar
Laments Nigeria’s overfishing crisis
“You’d be amazed by the whales and dolphins in our waters – it’s like the Maldives!”
Royal Roots, Modern Values
Though his father is the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Toriola jokes:
“I’m not an ‘Obalola’ – royal succession takes 40 years!”
Married his OAU sweetheart (an Ife princess) for 27 years
Dotes on daughter Damilola, an Imperial College STEM graduate
Leadership Philosophy
– Team-first approach (staff call him “Karl”)
– Family as anchor (“All this fanfare fades – family remains”)
– African solutions for infrastructure challenges
“We operate in one of the world’s toughest telecom environments,” he notes, citing power, security and forex hurdles.
Tech Tip from the CEO
“5G needs phone software updates – Samsung/Apple are testing MTN-specific versions coming soon!”
As MTN expands its fintech and digital services, this fisherman-CEO proves Nigerian business can be both high-tech and deeply human.
