Michael Eboda is a dynamic entrepreneur, journalist, and lawyer, best known as the founder and CEO of Powerful Media Group (PMG), one of the UK’s leading speciality media businesses. At 63, he has made a significant mark through his leadership of PMG, which he founded 14 years ago. The company is renowned for its flagship publication, The Powerlist, an annual magazine that highlights the most influential people of African or African Caribbean heritage in the UK. The Powerlist has gained international recognition, featuring prominent figures such as the Duchess of Sussex, Stormzy, and Ismail Ahmed, who topped the list in 2020.
Under Michael’s guidance, PMG has expanded its reach with several other successful ventures. In addition to The Powerlist, the company publishes Future Leaders, which focuses on the next generation of talent and social mobility, and operates a bespoke recruitment firm within the legal sector. PMG also hosts prestigious events, such as the Powerlist Black Excellence Awards, an annual black-tie dinner that has become one of the most respected black-focused events in the UK, attracting high-profile guests and celebrating achievements within the community.
Michael’s career path is marked by a series of bold transitions. Born in South London, he moved to Nigeria in his teens and qualified for the Nigerian bar in 1984. After returning to the UK, he pursued a Master’s in Business Law but soon shifted his career focus. He dabbled in entrepreneurship, owning a restaurant, retail outlet, and various properties before transitioning into journalism. As Group Editorial Director for the Ethnic Media Group, Michael helped transform the company’s struggling publications, New Nation and Eastern Eye, into the largest minority ethnic newspaper group in Europe within five years.
Michael’s professional journey reflects his passion for diverse industries and his commitment to championing talent and opportunity. Beyond his media ventures, he has a wide array of personal interests, including football, athletics, design, art, photography, and travel.
