Man Like Lookman: The AFCON 2023 Rising Star

by Duke Magazine

A new Nigerian-British sensation, Ademola Lookman, has wowed Nigerians at the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Ademola Lookman was born on October 20, 1997, in Wandsworth, Greater London, to Nigerian parents.

Lookman launched his career with Charlton Athletics Academy in 2014 after signing from Waterloo, a youth football club based in the London Borough of Lambeth.

In a significant transfer move, Lookman officially joined Everton by signing a four-and-a-half-year contract on January 5, 2017, for a fee that remained undisclosed but was initially reported as £7.5 million, potentially increasing to £11 million with additional clauses.

Lookman made his debut for the club just ten days later in an impressive 4-0 victory against Manchester City, coming on as a substitute for Ross Barkley in the 90th minute and contributing with a goal, securing the team’s fourth. Lookman’s inaugural European appearance for Everton took place in a 1-0 triumph over MFK Ružomberok during the Europa League’s third qualifying round first leg.

On July 25, 2019, Lookman returned to RB Leipzig on a five-year contract. On August 31, 2021, Lookman embarked on a season-long loan to Leicester City. His debut for Leicester took place on September 11, 2021, as he entered the game as a substitute in the 73rd minute during a match against Manchester City, which unfortunately ended in a 1-0 defeat for Leicester.

In the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament, Lookman scored two goals against the Indomitable Lions, the Cameroonian national team, to secure Nigeria’s victory in the quarterfinals.

As the Super Eagles of Nigeria celebrate this triumph, their next challenge awaits as they are set to return to the same venue for a quarter-final showdown next Friday. Their opponents in this crucial match will be Angola, who advanced to the last eight by defeating Namibia 3-0 in an earlier encounter.

Lookman’s stellar performance propelled Nigeria to victory in the ongoing AFCON, showcasing skill and determination on the grand stage.
