The LaLiga EA SPORTS African MVP, an esteemed award recognizing exceptional talent in the league, proudly crowned Iñaki Williams as the best African player after his stellar season, which saw him score 12 goals. Receiving the trophy from Athletic Club’s legend Andoni Goikoetxea, Williams expressed gratitude, considering it an honor to represent all African players in LaLiga. Reflecting on his deep roots in Ghana and his love for Bilbao and Athletic Club, Williams expressed hope for contention in future seasons.
Emerging triumphant after a rigorous voting process, the Ghanaian international and Athletic Club forward captured fans’ hearts and the admiration of the adjudicating jury. Williams secured an impressive tally of 46 points, representing 24 percent of the votes, showcasing unparalleled skill and dedication throughout the season. Moroccan international Brahim Diaz from Real Madrid closely followed in second place with 37 points, trailed by his compatriot Youssef En-Nesyri of Sevilla FC with 30 points.
The voting process, overseen by a jury comprising African journalists from 31 countries alongside fan votes, allocated points based on player performance. Each player received one point for third-best, two points for second-best, and three points for the best player. In cases of a tie, the player with more selections as the best player secured victory. Notable mentions in this edition included Hamari Traore of Real Sociedad with 26 points, Bertrand Traore of Villarreal CF with 21 points, and Jonathan Bamba of RC Celta with 16 points.
The award celebrates talent and continues the tradition of honoring African players who make a significant impact in LaLiga, following in the footsteps of previous deserving recipients like Yassine Bounou of Sevilla FC and Samuel Chukwueze of Villarreal CF.
