Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, Nigeria, received the African Governor of the Year award for Good Governance at the 14th African Leadership Magazine Persons of the Year ceremony in February 2025. Yusuf’s administration has prioritized education, settling outstanding examination fees, reducing tuition in state-owned institutions, and providing financial support to students. These initiatives have improved access to education and enhanced the state’s human capital development. In infrastructure, the government has undertaken projects to improve road networks, water supply, and sanitation. The revival of the Kano State Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) and the restoration of tap water supply after an eight-year hiatus are notable achievements.
Governor Yusuf’s commitment to transparency and citizen engagement is evident in his media-friendly approach, utilizing digital platforms to communicate policies and gather feedback. This participatory governance model has fostered trust and accountability, positioning Kano State as a model for good governance in Nigeria.
