Prince Sam Amuka Pemu: Celebrating a Lifetime of Journalism Excellence

Prince Sam Amuka Pemu, a distinguished Nigerian journalist, columnist, and publisher, was born on June 13, 1935, in Sapele, Delta State, Nigeria. He was born into the family of the late Pa Amuka-Pemu and Madam Teshoma Amuka-Pemu, who passed away in May 2014.

Amuka Pemu began his illustrious career as an editor at the Daily Times of Nigeria before co-founding The Punch with his friend, the late Olu Aboderin, in 1971. Later, in 1983, he established Vanguard Newspaper along with three other Nigerian columnists.

Throughout his career, Amuka Pemu has been a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism, known for his integrity, intellect, and unwavering commitment to the truth. His contributions to the media industry have been widely recognized, earning him praise from peers and leaders alike.

President Buhari described him as a “Gentleman of the Press” on his 80th birthday, while Nduka Obaigbena hailed him as an icon and a leading light in Nigerian journalism.

Amuka Pemu’s dedication to journalism and his courage in upholding the values of truth and justice have made him a respected figure in Nigerian media. His influence and impact on the industry are evident in the success of Vanguard and The Punch, two of Nigeria’s most prominent newspapers.

On the occasion of his birthday, President Bola Tinubu congratulated Amuka Pemu, recognizing his outstanding service to the nation through his journalistic endeavors. The President commended him for his contributions to the media and beyond and wished him many more years in good health.
