Akinwunmi Ambode was born on June 14, 1963, in Epe General Hospital to Christianah Oluleye Ambode and Festus Akinwale Ambode. Akinwunmi Ambode is one of Festus Ambode’s 10 children.
He is a Nigerian politician who presided over Lagos State as governor from 2015 to 2019. Before entering politics, he worked as a financial consultant and spent 27 years as a civil servant.
As a member of the All Progressives Congress, the state’s ruling party, Ambode campaigned for governor of Lagos State in April 2015. He won the election, defeating Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party in second place by 150,000 votes. Following Babatunde Fashola, Ambode took over office on May 29, 2015.
Between 1969 through 1974, Ambode attended St. Jude’s Primary School in Ebute Metta, Lagos State. He furthered his studies at Federal Government College in Warri, Delta State, from 1974 to 1981 before bagging his first degree in accounting from the University of Lagos from 1981 to 1984, at age 21.
He also holds a master’s in accounting from the University of Lagos and is a certified public accountant.
Ambode received a Fulbright Scholarship to attend the Hubert Humphries Fellowship Programme in Boston, Massachusetts. He also took the Advanced Management Programme at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also took classes and completed programmes at the Institute of Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland, the Cranfield School of Management in Cranfield, England, and INSEAD in Singapore.
In addition, he studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in Cambridge, USA.
He started the nonprofit La Roche Leadership Foundation in 2013. Its objective is to put Nigerian and Lagos State flags at every government-run school in Lagos State.
Ambode wed his heartthrob Bolanle Patience Odukomaiya in 1991, and the couple is blessed with a set of twins.
