Funke Akindele joins Nollywood’s Biggest Names

Funke Akindele is a top Nigerian actress and filmmaker known for her blockbuster movies, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, Battle on Bukka Street, and, quite recently, A Tribe Called Judah, which is the highest-grossing Nollywood movie to be ever produced.

Akindele was born on August 24, 1977, in Ikorodu, Lagos State, Nigeria. She is the second of three children. She attended the Ogun State Polytechnic (now Moshood Abiola Polytechnic), where she studied mass communication.

Funke Akindele rose to prominence through her role in the sitcom I Need to Know, captivating audiences from 1998 to 2002. Her outstanding performance in the 2009 movie Jenifa earned her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, solidifying her status as a talented actress. This breakthrough role brought her widespread recognition and marked the beginning of her journey to fame.

Akindele continued to shine in her portrayal of Jenifa, reprising the character in the 2015 television series adaptation titled Jenifa’s Diary. Her stellar performance earned her consecutive wins as the Best Actress in a Comedy at the 2016 and 2017 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.

Impressively, Akindele clinched the same award in 2020 and 2022, totaling five wins in the Best Actress in a Comedy category. Her remarkable achievements at the AMVCA make her the most nominated actress and filmmaker, boasting a total of six wins, establishing her as the actress with the highest number of victories. Akindele has over 25 industry awards to her credit.

Funke Akindele has been involved in numerous movies and TV series, both in Nollywood and Yoruba cinema. Some of her notable works include Maami, The Return of Jenifa, One Fine Day, My Siblings and I, A Trip to Jamaica, Jenifa on Lockdown, Chief Daddy (1 & 2), Dwindle, Isoken, Industreet She is also known for her role in the TV series Jenifa’s Diary, a spin-off from the movie. She has appeared in over 50 films, including her first movie on Amazon Prime Video, She Must Be Obeyed, where she played the roles of She and Siyanbola Adewole.
