Omot’s early life was marked by resilience and determination. Born in a refugee camp in Nairobi, Kenya, to Pillow and Kwot Omot, his family endured a perilous journey from Gambela, Ethiopia, seeking safety amid a civil war. After living in the camp for three years, they resettled in Minnesota with the help of Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service.
Growing up, Omot was primarily raised by his older brother while his mother worked multiple jobs to support the family. Initially focusing on football, Omot transitioned to basketball following a growth spurt and quickly demonstrated his talent on the court.
In high school, Omot began playing basketball at Mahtomedi High School, where he earned accolades in his senior season, averaging 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists per game. Despite his success, he did not receive NCAA Division I scholarship offers initially, prompting him to pursue opportunities at the collegiate level in Division II.
Omot eventually transferred to Indian Hills Community College, where he excelled and earned a scholarship to Baylor University. His college career at Baylor included moments of significant growth, with standout performances that showcased his scoring ability and athleticism.
Omot’s professional career has taken him around the globe, playing for various teams, including a notable stint in the Basketball Africa League with Al Ahly, where he led the team to its first championship and became the first African player to be named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Following his successful season, he signed with multiple international teams, including a recent move to the Beijing Ducks in 2024. Omot has also been a vital player for the South Sudan national team, contributing to their historic qualification for the World Cup and making his mark in international basketball competitions.
