From his position as a senior management consultant in the United Kingdom, Dr Dipo Awojide has emerged as one of the most incisive and influential voices advocating for the radical transformation of higher education in Nigeria.
Operating beyond the hashtags of social media, where he is known as ‘Ogbeni Dipo,’ his contribution is defined by detailed policy critique, actionable solutions, and the pragmatic mobilisation of diaspora expertise for national development.
His vision is built on a foundational critique: that Nigeria’s university system has been held back by political expansion, chronic underfunding, and a curriculum disconnected from the modern economy. For nearly a decade, he has consistently argued that the path forward is not in building more institutions, but in strategically upgrading existing ones.
The Pillars of his Reform Advocacy
- Championing Quality over Quantity
He publicly commended the federal government’s 2025 decision to place a seven-year ban on new federal tertiary institutions, calling it “the right decision” to halt politically motivated proliferation and refocus on improving existing facilities and staff welfare. - Bridging Academia and Industry
A recurring theme in his writings is the critical need to make graduates employable. He advocates for mandatory career consultants, revamped internships, and curricula co-designed with employers to equip students with practical, transferable skills. - Investing in Educators and Infrastructure
He argues passionately that the welfare and development of academics are non-negotiable for a functioning system. He ties this to urgent calls for tech-enabled teaching, research investment, and the repair of dilapidated university infrastructure.
His commitment extends beyond commentary. He actively supports schemes like the government’s BRIDGE initiative, a platform connecting diaspora professionals with Nigerian universities.
He sees this as a vital channel for professionals like himself to teach modules or supervise research, directly transferring knowledge back home. Furthermore, he has established the Dipo Awojide Education Fund, which provides financial support to students, recognising that access is a key part of the educational equation.
Dr Awojide’s contribution was formally recognised with an honorary award from the Nigerian Universities Education Students Association for his impact on the education sector.
He continues to frame his advocacy around a powerful conviction: “every young Nigerian deserves a shot at a world class education”. Through persistent, solution-focused dialogue, he works to turn that conviction into a national reality.
