Brice Oligui Nguema: A New Chapter for Gabon

by Duke Magazine

Gabon witnessed a historic political shift in April 2025 when its Constitutional Court confirmed Brice Oligui Nguema as the country’s president following the April 12 general elections. After ending the Bongo family’s 56-year hold on power, Nguema emerged as both a symbol of reform and a test case for Africa’s democratic renewal.

As a former head of the Republican Guard and transitional leader after the 2023 coup, Nguema surprised skeptics by guiding Gabon through a relatively peaceful transition period. His promise of transparent governance, constitutional reforms, and electoral accountability laid the groundwork for his popular mandate.

Now officially president, Nguema faces the enormous task of institutional rebuilding in a country where decades of elite dominance had eroded public trust. But his rise signals something important: the continent is increasingly demanding not just change, but leadership that listens, reforms, and includes.
