Ian V. Rowe is a distinguished educator and senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, where he concentrates on issues of education, upward mobility, and family formation. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Vertex Partnership Academies, a network of character-based, International Baccalaureate public charter high schools located in the Bronx, which opened its doors in 2022.
His career is deeply rooted in a commitment to empowering young people, a philosophy crystallised in his book, Agency: The Four Point Plan (F.R.E.E.) for ALL Children to Overcome the Victimhood Narrative and Discover Their Pathway to Power.
Before founding Vertex, Mr Rowe served for ten years as the chief executive officer of Public Prep, a pioneering network of tuition-free, single-sex public charter schools in New York City. His extensive career also includes significant leadership roles beyond the classroom.
He was the deputy director of postsecondary success at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and held positions at the White House, serving as director of strategy and performance measurement for the USA Freedom Corps. In an earlier chapter of his professional life, he was a senior vice president at MTV, where his work on public service campaigns earned him two prestigious Emmy Awards.
A firm believer in the power of personal agency, Mr Rowe advocates for an educational approach that empowers students to become masters of their own destiny. He is a proponent of the “success sequence”—education, work, marriage, and children—as a reliable pathway to stability and prosperity.
His views are informed by his own background as the son of Jamaican immigrants and a product of New York’s public schools, including Brooklyn Technical High School. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science engineering from Cornell University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, where he made history as the first black editor-in-chief of the Harbus student newspaper.
Mr Rowe’s influence extends to numerous boards and organisations. He serves as the chairman of the board for Spence-Chapin, a non-profit adoption services organisation, and is a trustee at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. He is also a senior visiting fellow at the Woodson Center and a writer for the 1776 Unites Campaign.
Through his writing, which has appeared in publications such as The Wall Street Journal and USA Today, and his leadership in education, Ian V. Rowe continues to shape the conversation on how best to prepare all young people for a future of their own making.
