John Dramani Mahama is a Ghanaian politician and former president of the Republic of Ghana, serving from 2012 to 2017. Born on November 29, 1958, in Damongo, he is a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Mahama first entered politics in the 1990s, serving as a Member of Parliament for Bole-Bamboi before advancing to higher positions in government. He was appointed Vice President in 2009 under President John Atta Mills, and after Mills’ death in 2012, Mahama assumed the presidency.
During his presidency, Mahama focused on infrastructure development, education, and health care, as well as navigating Ghana’s economic challenges, including inflation and fiscal deficits. His government also dealt with energy crises, which led to public discontent. Despite these challenges, Mahama was praised for his efforts in advancing the country’s democratic processes and international relations.
In 2016, Mahama sought re-election but was defeated by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in a competitive race. After losing, Mahama remained active in the political scene and continued to lead the NDC. He ran for president again in the 2020 elections but was once more defeated by Akufo-Addo.
Beyond his political career, Mahama is a respected figure in Ghanaian public life, known for his commitment to education, youth development, and regional integration. He has also represented Ghana in various international platforms and continues to play a significant role in African politics.
