On February 16, 2025, Ugandan long-distance runner Jacob Kiplimo delivered a historic performance at the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona, setting a new men’s half marathon world record with a time of 56 minutes and 42 seconds. This remarkable feat shattered the previous record of 57:30, established by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in October 2024, by an astounding 48 seconds.
Kiplimo’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as he became the first athlete to complete a half marathon in under 57 minutes, marking the most significant single improvement in the men’s half marathon record. The 24-year-old, who is also a two-time world cross country champion, capitalized on ideal racing conditions in Barcelona, characterized by mild temperatures and minimal wind.
From the outset, Kiplimo set a blistering pace. He reached the 5km mark in 13:34, already on track for a world record. Maintaining his momentum, he crossed the 10km checkpoint in 26:46. By the 15km mark, Kiplimo clocked a time of 40:07, setting a world best for that distance as well. He continued to accelerate, passing the 20km mark in 53:42 before crossing the finish line in 56:42.
Reflecting on his performance, Kiplimo expressed his elation, stating, “I am very excited about what I did today. I started strong, I wanted to have a great race, but I didn’t expect to break the world record.” He also noted the favorable conditions, mentioning that everything went better than expected.
Following this monumental achievement, Kiplimo has announced plans to rest until his marathon debut at the TCS London Marathon on April 27, where he will join a star-studded field that includes four-time winner Eliud Kipchoge.
Kiplimo’s record-breaking run in Barcelona not only cements his status as one of the world’s premier long-distance runners but also raises anticipation for his future endeavors on the marathon circuit
