Idris Elba is slated to direct the short film “Dust to Dreams,” set in Lagos, in collaboration with Nigerian filmmaker Mo Abudu. The project is a joint effort between Abudu’s EbonyLife Films and the African Export Import Bank (Afreximbank) through its Creative Africa Nexus (Canex), as reported by Deadline on March 19, 2024.

Joining the cast are British-Nigerian music star Seal, alongside Nollywood luminaries Nse Ikpe-Etim, Eku Edewor, Atlanta Bridget Johnson, and former Nigerian Idol contestant Constance Olatunde.

Abudu, the mastermind behind the film, will wear multiple hats as executive producer and producer, with Heidi Uys serving as supervising producer. Additional co-producers include Temidayo Makanjuola, Inem King, and Vanessa Demme.

“Dust to Dreams” explores the dynamic between a mother and her teenage daughter as they navigate meeting the father for the first time.

Expressing her enthusiasm, Abudu shared, “I am thrilled to collaborate with Afreximbank and such a talented team. ‘Dust to Dreams’ holds a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to bring it to life with such dedicated partners.”

The film marks the first significant outcome of the co-production deal inked by Abudu and Elba via their respective production houses, EbonyLife Media and Green Door Pictures, in 2023.

Elba emphasized his commitment to using his platform for positive change, stating, “Partnering with Mo, we aim to provide top-tier industry education to aspiring storytellers and amplify their authentic voices.”

This partnership reflects a pivotal step toward fostering a media landscape that is more inclusive and diverse, resonating with the rich tapestry of voices and experiences from Africa and its Diaspora worldwide.
