HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO JOHN LEWIS AS HE CLOCKS 80 TODAY John Robert Lewis (born February 21, 1940), is an American politician and civil rights leader. He is the U.S. Representative for Georgia’s 5th Congressional District, serving in his 17th term in the House, having served since 1986. He is a member of the Democratic Party, and the Dean of the Georgia Congressional.
Lewis, who as Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. He is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, and has served as a Chief Deputy Whip since 1991 and Senior Chief Deputy since 2003.
Lewis was a recipient of innumerable honorary degrees and awards from national and institutions. He received the highest civilian honour in the United States (Presidential Medal of Freedom) from the erstwhile U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama in 2011.
Recently, the United States of America honours the octagenarian for his great contribution to American politics. Lewis was one of the people who contributed to the American society in the area of campaign against racial segregation. One of his big achievements was him being part of the protesters for civil rights in the country.
