The path to a throne is seldom a straightforward one, and for Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the journey to becoming the 44th Olubadan of Ibadan has been a narrative rich with political intrigue, legal challenges, and ultimate royal legitimisation. His story is a testament to the complex interplay between modern governance and timeless tradition in contemporary Nigeria.
The political career of Oba Ladoja has been marked by significant legal and electoral endeavours. In August 2008, a period of considerable challenge commenced when he was remanded in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos. Granted bail shortly thereafter for the substantial sum of one hundred million naira, the subsequent legal proceedings in March 2009 saw testimony regarding the distribution of funds, a chapter that undoubtedly shaped his political resilience.
Undeterred, Oba Ladoja remained a prominent figure in Oyo State politics. He stood as the governorship candidate for the Accord party in both the 2011 and 2015 elections. Demonstrating the fluid nature of political allegiances, he later orchestrated the merger of the Accord Party into the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2017. Further realignments saw him, along with allies, transition to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and subsequently, in December 2018, to the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), navigating the evolving political landscape with strategic acumen.
The most profound transition, however, began on 12 August 2024, when he was formally elevated to the rank of Oba, receiving a ceremonial beaded crown from the then-reigning Olubadan and the Oyo State Government. This act signalled his official entry into the highest echelons of Ibadan’s traditional hierarchy.
Following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the path was cleared for Oba Ladoja’s ascension. On 7 July 2025, he was announced as the incoming monarch. The official state approval was conferred on 21 August 2025 by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, who confirmed Oba Ladoja as the 44th Olubadan-designate. A formal coronation was set for 26 September 2025 at the historic Mapo Hall, a fitting venue in the ancient city for the installation of its newest custodian of tradition and culture.
