In a significant royal exchange, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the King of the Asante Kingdom, made his first official visit to King Charles III since the English monarch’s coronation in March 2023. The meeting, which occurred on July 23, 2024, took place at King Charles’s Sandringham Estate in Norfolk, renowned for its expansive 20,000-acre grounds.
The visit is part of the Asantehene’s current trip to the United Kingdom, where he is also scheduled to give a lecture at the British Museum. His Majesty’s presence in the UK coincides with his Silver Jubilee celebrations, marking 25 years on the Golden Stool. The royal encounter came amid King Charles’s recent health challenges, including a prostate cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery earlier this year.
Photographs released by the Royal Family on social media capture the warm exchange between the two monarchs, showing them engaging in friendly handshakes and smiles. The captions highlighted the significance of the Asantehene’s visit, noting it as part of his ongoing celebrations in the UK.
As part of his visit, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II will also host the sixth Akwasidae Festival in London on August 4, 2024. His UK itinerary has included discussions with the Victoria and Albert Museum and participation in the Awukudae festival at the British Museum. The Asantehene departed Ghana on July 13, 2024, for this notable series of engagements.
