Google Appoints Alex Okosi as MD in Africa

The position of managing director for Google in Africa will be filled by Alex Okosi, who is currently managing director for YouTube in EMEA Emerging Markets.

As part of his new position, Okosi will be in charge of Google’s activities in Africa, including initiatives to support the development of the continent’s economies and enterprises as well as the expansion of access to the internet and the provision of tools to assist the next billion users in maximising its benefits.

According to Meir Brand, Vice President, EMEA Emerging Markets at Google. “Alex is a proven leader with a wealth of experience in the media and technology industries. He has a deep understanding of African countries and a passion for using technology to empower people and businesses.”

Okosi is an experienced leader in media, entertainment, and technology. He worked for Viacom International Media Networks Africa and BET International as Executive Vice President and Managing Director before joining YouTube. In his most recent position at YouTube, Okosi was instrumental in directing the platform’s growth and expansion throughout Turkey, the Middle East, and Africa.

Okosi reactng to his new appointment, “I am excited at the prospect of leading Google’s team in Africa and the opportunity to be an even closer part of this diverse and dynamic region, which is so close to my heart.”

“I’m a firm believer in the potential for technology and, in particular, the internet to improve people’s lives and to help individuals and businesses in Africa to thrive,” he added.

With offices in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, Google has been operating in Africa for more than ten years. Millions of individuals across Africa use the company’s goods and services on a daily basis.
