John Momoh: Curiosity meets Courage

John Momoh was born on July 1st, 1957. He is a Nigerian broadcast journalist and the chairman and CEO of Lagos-based Channels TV, a 24-hour news and media television channel that has won numerous awards and is independent.

Momoh was raised in Lagos State, which is in the southwest of Nigeria. His father worked as a chef. Momoh is well-known as a pioneer in the sector of transformation. He gave the first address of the “The Mass Media: Setting the Nigerian Agenda” Distinguished Lecture Series of the University of Lagos Mass Communication Alumni Association. On August 21, 2020, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari also appointed him to serve as the UNILAG Governing Council’s acting chairman.

The ace media personnel finished his secondary education at Baptist Academy before going on to the University of Lagos, where he earned a master’s degree in international law and diplomacy and a bachelor’s degree in mass communication. He was given the Distinguished Alumni Award by the Lagos Business School in June 2013. He graduated from the University of Lagos, the Lagos Business School, and Harvard Business School. He also holds professional diplomas from the Thomson Foundation in the UK and is a fellow of both the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.

Momoh served as a news anchor, senior reporter, and senior producer for the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, the Nigerian Television Authority, and Nigeria’s National Radio and Television Stations before founding Channels Television in 1995.

Awards and Recognitions

He was named “Officer of the Order of the Niger” by the Nigerian government in December 2005.

He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nigerian Information Society in 2006.

He joined the Board of Directors of the Constituency for Africa (CFA), a Washington, District of Columbia-based organisation with an African emphasis, in October 2014. John Momoh received the Leadership Award at the 2014 Planet Africa Awards held at the Grand Victorian Convention Centre in Canada in November of the same year.

John Momoh is a fellow of the United States Information Agency’s International Visitor Programme (IVP), a Chevening fellow, and a fellow of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom’s “African Future Leaders” initiative.

He has served as a jury member for the International Emmy Awards and is a member of the New York-based International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Additionally, he is a jury member for the Association for International Broadcasters’ AIB Awards.

John Momoh was sworn in as the Chairman of the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) in November 2016.
