Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona assumed the revered position of the Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom in 1960, thereby initiating one of the longest reigns among Nigeria’s monarchs. Born to Prince Rufai Adeto and Alhaja Ajibabi Adetona, he hails from the esteemed Anikilaya ruling family, a lineage deeply intertwined with the history and traditions of the Ijebu people.
His educational journey reflects a commitment to learning and personal growth. Beginning with institutions such as Baptist School in Ereko, Ijebu Ode, Ogbere United Primary School in Oke Agbo, Ijebu Igbo, and Ansar-Ud-Deen School in Ijebu Ode for primary education, he pursued further studies at Olu-Iwa College in Ijebu Ode for his secondary education. Eager to expand his knowledge and skills, he ventured to the United Kingdom for advanced studies in accountancy after a brief tenure with the Audit Department of the Western Region.
The process of his ascension to the throne was a meticulously orchestrated affair, involving key figures within the Ijebu community. Notable individuals like Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola played crucial roles in facilitating his coronation, which marked a significant milestone for the Ijebu people. Despite his relative youth at the time, Oba Adetona’s charisma and evident leadership qualities garnered him nominations for prestigious roles, such as the presidency of the House of Chiefs.
However, the ultimate selection of a more senior figure for this position did not diminish the recognition of Oba Adetona’s exceptional leadership potential. His reign as the Awujale of Ijebuland has been characterized by a deep commitment to the welfare and development of his people, earning him respect and admiration both within and beyond the boundaries of his kingdom.
