Chris Bennett is an American entrepreneur and technology leader best known as the co-founder and former chief executive officer of Soldsie, a pioneering social commerce platform that enabled merchants to sell products directly through comments on Facebook and Instagram.
His work sits at the intersection of innovation, e-commerce, and social media, reflecting a career dedicated to reimagining how businesses connect with customers online.
Mr Bennett’s journey into technology began during his time at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in economics.
While still a student, he demonstrated his entrepreneurial instincts by launching LiquidBooks.net, a peer-to-peer textbook service that generated significant revenue, foreshadowing his future in the startup world.
After graduation, he initially pursued a career in private equity, but soon found the field unfulfilling and made the decisive move to Silicon Valley, drawn by the burgeoning opportunities in technology.
In 2011, Mr Bennett met his future co-founder, Arrel Gray, through the close-knit startup community of San Francisco. Together, they established Soldsie, which officially launched in May 2012 at a time when the viability of Facebook commerce, or f-commerce, was widely questioned.
The platform introduced a novel approach: it allowed retailers to upload products with descriptions and prices, after which customers could complete a purchase by simply typing the word sold in the comments section.
This simple interaction triggered an invoicing system managed through a comprehensive backend dashboard, effectively transforming social media pages into functional points of sale.
Under Mr Bennett’s leadership, Soldsie gained significant traction. The company raised a seed round of one million dollars, with backing from prominent investors including 500 Startups and FundersClub, followed by a Series A funding round of four million dollars in 2014.
By that time, the platform had processed over twenty-five million dollars in transactions, a threefold increase from the previous year. His insights into the evolving role of social media led him to argue that platforms like Facebook would shift from merely driving brand awareness to becoming direct channels for generating revenue.
Beyond his work with Soldsie, Mr Bennett has been a committed advocate for diversity in the technology industry. He is a co-founder of Black Founders, a San Francisco-based organisation established to increase the number of successful black entrepreneurs in tech.
The group has hosted educational forums and provided networking opportunities for entrepreneurs in major cities, working to address the significant underrepresentation in the sector.
A native of Miami, Florida, Mr Bennett remains based in the San Francisco Bay Area, where he continues to be an influential voice on technology, innovation, and social change. His career reflects a sustained belief in the power of the internet to create new economic opportunities and transform the relationship between businesses and their customers.
