Meet Jonathan Adewale, a 17-year-old from South West Nigeria, who emerged as the youngest Chartered Accountant ever.

The world’s 3 million plus accounting professionals who are members of the Institute of Financial Accountants, IFA now include the world record holder from Ibadan.

Adewale was declared to be the youngest chartered accountant at the 69th ICAN induction ceremony for new members in 2022. Although, he will have to wait another four years before becoming a member of ICAN, as ICAN’s bylaws stipulate that in order to be admitted as an associate, members of the Institute must be at least 21 years old.

At the age of 14, Jonathan Adewale took the exams for accounting professionals while continuing his secondary schooling.

Speaking about his extraordinary accomplishment, Adewale claimed that his father, who was finally a certified accountant, had attempted the ICAN examination multiple times but had repeatedly failed.

According to him, “I was majorly motivated by my parents, and elder brother. Another thing that motivated me was that my dad wrote his final stage of the ICAN examination five times, this took two and a half years and I didn’t want to repeat any stage. In the end all thanks to God, I completed all the stages without repeating any within two and a half years.”

Adewale was however given a full scholarship by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Nigeria to pursue his goal of earning a Bachelor of Accounting degree with a First Class honors at Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun State, Nigeria.
