Afrobeats sensation Davido reflects on his decade-long journey of championing African music in a recent interview with Billboard. In a behind-the-scenes video titled “Davido Welcomes All to His World of Music Honda Stage x Billboard,” the Grammy nominee discusses his musical evolution and Afrobeats’ global recognition.
Initially a producer, Davido transitioned to singing, unexpectedly catapulting to stardom with his debut single. “In my head at that time, I never thought I would be in the forefront, be an artist,” he reveals, recounting how a cousin’s decision to release one of his songs under his name led him to pursue music full-time upon returning to Nigeria.
Expressing his fondness for collaborations, Davido emphasizes his desire to introduce artists to his musical realm. He also hints at a female guest appearance on his upcoming track, “Flex My Soul,” slated for performance on the Billboard Honda Stage.
Having teased “Flex My Soul” in 2023 ahead of his fourth album “Timeless,” Davido underscores the global ascent of Afrobeats, noting that while access has expanded, the genre’s essence has always resonated.
