Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy is a Nigerian Afro-pop singer and songwriter. He is one of the biggest and most sought-after African artists making waves across the globe. With his most recent accomplishment winning Grammy award courtesy his ‘Twice as Tall’ album which won him the award for Best World Music Album at the 63rd Annual Awards, the music sensation is not bowing out from dishing out pure ensemble of fine tunes.
Born in 1991 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, the vocalist has been consistent since his appearance at stardom in 2012 with his “Like to Party” lead single from his debut album “L.I.F.E.” With almost a decade of musical career, Burna Boy has become a household name not just in his home country Nigeria, but across Africa, and in extension to the global stage.
Being a dancehall singer, Burna Boy is recognized as one of the creative live performers across the world with his unique style and composition. Notable of which was his performance before a sold-out crowd London’s O2 Academy Brixton in 2018.
Having had myriads of performances across lengths and breadths, the 29-year-old music star has released five (5) studio albums with the 4th and 5th (African Giant and Twice and Tall) still garnering him awards and recognitions everywhere. Recall, that the ‘African Giant’ album got Burna Boy his first nomination at the 2020 Grammys before going ahead to win it big in 2021.
The Odogwu, as he is fondly called by friends and fans is a recipient of many awards like: Best International Act at the 2019 BET Awards; Edison Award in the World Album category for African Giant; and the Best International Act at the MOBO Awards.
A little stretch away from his musical acts, Burna Boy is considered as a Pan-African activist who has always infused conscious lyrics in his music commenting on burning issues such as inequality, violence, colonialism, systemic racism, miseducation and decolonization.
In 2021, Burna Boy was listed among the 100 influential Africans by Forbes.
