Segun Julius Agbaje is a Nigerian banking executive. He had his first degree in Accountancy from University of San Francisco, United States, and furthered his academic pursuit to have a master’s degree in Business Administration.
Agbaje started his career by working with Ernst & Young in San Francisco before going back to Nigeria to join Guaranty Trust Bank as a pioneer staff. He has since had a steady career growth in the commercial bank where he rose to the positions of Executive Director and Deputy Managing Director in 2000 and 2002 respectively. In 2011, Agbaje became the Managing Director of GTBank after the demise of the bank’s co-founder, Tayo Aderinokun.
He was also very instrumental in putting together Guaranty Trust Bank’s landmark USD350million Eurobond offering in 2007 and later that year, the listing of its US$750 million Global Depository Receipts (GDR) in an unprecedented concurrent global offering in the domestic and international capital markets – which made Guaranty Trust Bank the first Nigerian company and the first bank in Sub-Saharan Africa to be listed on the Main Market of the London Stock Exchange.
The creative initiative of Agbaje as the Managing Director of GTBank has won him awards that includes; Best Bank in Nigeria by Euromoney; African Bank of the Year by African Banker Award; Best Bank in Nigeria by World Finance UK; Most innovative Bank by EMEA Finance; Best Banking Group by World Business Leader Magazine and Best Bank in Nigeria award by the Banker Awards.
