Bayo Adebowale: A Journey of Education, Literature, and Cultural Enrichment

Bayo Adebowale, a multifaceted Nigerian author, was born on June 6, 1944, in Ibadan, Oyo State. Growing up in a farming family led by Akangbe Adebowale, he embraced education early on. After completing his secondary education at Secondary Modern School Ibadan in 1958, he pursued teaching qualifications, earning certificates from St Peter’s Teacher College and Baptist College.

Continuing his academic journey, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Language from the University of Ibadan in 1974. Following his National Youth Service Corps in 1975, he ventured into public service as an education officer before transitioning to teaching roles at Government Trade Centre, Oyo State. His dedication to academia led him to pursue a master’s degree in English language in 1978, and later a Ph.D. in Literature in English from the University of Ilorin in 1997.

Throughout his career, he held various teaching and administrative positions, including Lecturer I at Oyo State College of Education and Deputy Rector at the Polytechnic of Ibadan. Beyond academia, Bayo Adebowale is renowned as a novelist, poet, critic, and the founder of the African Heritage Library and Cultural Centre in Adeyipo, Ibadan, Oyo State.
