Colourblind in Men: Did You Know?

by Duke Magazine

Men are more likely to be colourblind than women.

Statistics:

– 8% of males have some form of color vision deficiency.

– 0.5% of females have some form of color vision deficiency.

Why the disparity?

Color vision is linked to the X chromosome.
Men have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).
Women have two X chromosomes (XX).

Genetic advantage:

Women are less likely to inherit colorblindness since one X chromosome can compensate for the other.

Types of colorblindness:

Red-green colorblindness (most common)
Monochromacy (total colorblindness)
Other rare forms

Fascinating fact:

Some research suggests women may have better color perception due to genetic differences.
